The undisputed GOAT of Melbourne Japanese food. I’ve dined here a few times over the years. Minamishima is unrivaled in Melbourne. A consistent, delightful and masterful showing of Japanese cuisine. Food and service are top notch at Minamishima and it is very much worth a visit. Highly recommended.

Very romantic & intimate fine dining experience at Minamishima. Something about watching the chefs constructing your food makes the whole experience more interesting and enjoyable. Every bite was packed full of flavours making you want more, and more is what we got. Each dish was so different from the last. Pairing our courses with a bottle of their sake, just tied it in together. We had such a wonderful experience and we are very grateful we got the chance to participate in Minamishima Omakase dining. We recommend to all our friends and family.

It’s more of a fine dining-sushi omakase hybrid rather than a traditional omakase experience as you’re served some dishes, then a round of sushi, followed by more dishes then sushi etc. The food and service is of the calibre I expected given the reputation. The sushi rice and topping were perfect and they managed to make things like fugu interesting. The plated dishes had the expected finesse to them. Some of the other clientele on the night I dined were problematic to the point of detracting from the experience, and the sushi chefs were rather quiet given it was a sushi counter experience. It looked very much like an assembly line keeping them busy due to the tables being served. However, they became more engaging once the other annoying diners had moved on.

I have been meaning to try this restaurant for years. In summary, amazing food amazing service and felt like I was transported back to Japan eating here. The service would be the best I have experienced in Melbourne, attentive, always there and happy to help with any questions you might have. Just the right amount of food with the set menu and ordered wagyu special with truffle which was the highlight of the night. Excellent selection of sake available, just don’t look at the prices on the first page. Thank you for an amazing night and experience.

Amazing sushi and service though not a place for people looking for a “westernised” experience. If you want fantastic sushi made in the classic Japanese style, feel the individual grains of warm sushi rice with the fatty tuna that melts in your mouth; if you’re looking for authenticity without having to fly to Japan then come here and spoil yourself. The environment is understated but well curated, the food is made by skilled people with special care to quality and the menu doesn’t care about “white-washed Japanese food”. With the price tag and the no compromise kind of bar this place sets, it’s certainly not for everyone, but if you understand what traditional sushi is all about then you’d love it here.
